? Obligatory point: You should have a decent antivirus/anti-spyware suite. I don't, but I'm the sort of person who eats, sleeps, and breathes computers. When my computer catches the flu (and it's happened all of twice), I personally find the nasty and exterminate it.
? Watch the extensions. The extension is what determines what kind of file it is, and it's the part after the dot in the filename (they might be turned off – see my next point to turn them on). If the extension isn't .mp3, .avi, .mpg, you should probably be cautious. (This doesn't necessarily mean not to download it... the following steps are what I would consider "cautious". :) If the extension is .zip or .rar, be wary: this is only a package; the files inside the package are what you should be thinking about. Open the package and check the files inside (simply opening the package can't infect you). Certain extensions are almost always viruses: don't download anything with an extension of .exe, .com, .scr, .vb, or .hta – there are undoubtedly others, but I think I've mentioned the most common ones.
? On a related note, set your PC to always show the extensions. Open My Computer. Click Tools, Folder Options. Click the View tab, and make sure there's no check mark in front of "Hide extensions for known file types". (Once you do this, you'll have to include the extension when you rename a file... just leave the extmp3 movie downloads freeension the same as what it was before.)
? Pay attention to the size. A megabyte (MB) is 1,024 kilobytes (KB). Songs are typically at least 3 MB or larger. Movies are usually approximately 700 MB or larger. If you see something that's abnormally small, it's probably a virus.
? Most importantly: USE A SAFE AUDIO/VIDEO PLAYER. Windows Media Player is NOT SAFE!

Both of these are safe. AFAIK, you cannot get a virus by playing a file in either of them. If you try to play a file in VLC and Media Player Classic and it won't play in either one, it's most likely a virus, but don't worry – trying to play it in VLC or MPC won't infect your computer; just delete it if it didn't play in either one. Thank your lucky stars that you didn't try to play it in Windows Media Player... wait, luck had nothing to do with it. Thank me.
? Don't play files by double-clicking them. Instead, drag them onto VLC or MPC. Double-clicking can infect your computer if the file was a virus; dragging it onto the media player won't. It just won't play.
? Lots of viruses show up with exactly the search phrase you were looking for, or they'll have it at the beginning followed by a bunch of random keywords. Search smart: use keywords that are PART, but not ALL, of the title for what you're looking for. For instance, you could leave off the first word. You'll know the real title when you see it, because it'll include the words you left out. Viruses won't... they'll just mimic exmp3 movie downloads freeactly what you searched for.

Its all luck when you decide your downloading for free its risky but ive never had any viruses with limewire but thats just me
Learn to use bittorrent trackers. I advise reading about utorrent for it.
